WP4 - Community based monitoring of change in land use and biomass

WP4 explores effective approaches to monitoring REDD+ initiatives. REDD+ strategies that involve local community members in monitoring carbon stocks may improve the capacity of many countries to deliver large cuts in emissions at a low cost within a short time frame. It may also be an economic way for countries to gather data on changing rates of forest degradation. Empowering communities to monitor carbon stocks could also contribute to local livelihoods and forest biodiversity conservation. But how well does community-based forest biomass monitoring compare with research based monitoring? WP4 will compare and examine community-based and scientist-executed monitoring of forest biomass and biodiversity in forested landscapes in the four field sites. WP leadership is with Nordisk Fond for Miljø og Udvikling.
